Gautlönd farm is located south-west of lake Mývatn, at altitude 270m.a.s.l. in the shallow depression extending south of valley Laxárdalur. The area is characterized by heath vegetation, hills and moors.

Current farmers, the brothers Jóhann Böðvarsson and Sigurður Guðni Böðvarsson are the sixth generation of farmers, since Sigurður Jónsson moved to Gautlönd in 1818 from nearby Bárðardalur. The best known of this family is probably Jón Sigurðsson (1828−1889) P.M. and the speaker of the parliament. Three of his sons also were members of the Icelandic parliament.

Gautlönd is mentioned in the Old Icelandic Sagas; Vígaskúta− and Reykdæla Saga.

Today the above mentioned brothers run the farm with dairy-cows, cattle, sheep and horses.
